Re the Lemonade stand--really, is this issue so clear?

They were on public property, not their front yard. One reader pointed out they were a traffic hazard.

Really, should we legalize merchandizing on public sidewalks, meridians, streets, parks, etc.?

I am for it, and believe in sidewalk push-carts and vendors. But, it will make for messier streets and sidewalks. There will be traffic deaths, trash etc.

Some people seem to be saying as these kids were very cute, well, that makes it okay. But not if you are some fat guy selling tamales? Pornography? Recreational drugs?

Sidewalk vending should be legal for everybody, all the time.

You will never find the Republican Party take such a stand. The Dems either. The libertarians are worthless weenies, always talking about nice issues, unlike this one.

don't know about the lemonade deal...sounds a little like the truck vendors, eh?

but the ER text messaging. We got a new hospital down this way and they started the text messaging deal but if you think about it - the folks who REALLY NEED an ER are not looking at their phones.

In fact, the rescue squads down this way have a protocol they use to decide which ER to go to and "wait time" is not a criteria ...

so the "wait time" is likely not for true "ER" cases but folks going to the ER to likely receive non-ER treatment.

I think I read somewhere that about 1/2 the ER cases involve people who cannot pay....

so the irony here is that while a more "market based" service is offered - it may well be something that is more appealing to those who are not really concerned about cost which I think would be a more market-based system.

Someone who was going to pay out of pocket for a non-life-threatening visit might well pick the less expensive alternative if that was one of the choices.

Congestion pricing?

That statement does not pass the smell test. It seems very unlikely that Japanese workers are more efficient than Chinese workers. It is also hard to believe that they do not cost more. An employee of a major US drug company recently told me that his company had given up on exporting their drug to Japan and were preparing to make it there because of Japanese trade barriers. It seems more likely that Hewlett-Packard is doing the same thing.

Hmmm, I have to agree...

Maybe there's the possibility that Japanese factories are newer, more automated, etc but whatever the case is maybe this is an indication of something altogether different...

Could it instead indicate worker unrest in China and HP is looking for safer areas?

Duct tape is way more useful than a cellphone.

If you had written that duct tape had far more uses than a cellphone, I would agree with you, but depending on your circumstances, I have found a cellphone to be way more useful for making phone calls, and for taking pictures. It also provides a use for your car charger, while duct tape doesn't.
